The Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist

As you enter your third trimester, it’s time to start one more daunting task – packing your hospital bag! It’s exciting! It’s intimidating! It’s scary…. and likely you can’t wait!

Packing your hospital bag is a sign that the baby will be here soon. Trying to figure out exactly what to pack can be a lot when you’ve never been through the experience before or if it’s not your first time, you might have forgotten!

There are generally three people you are packing for: you, your significant other and the baby. And of course each of you need different things!

What’s in the Hospital Bag for You?

Whether you have a vaginal birth or a C-section, you mama are going to be wiped out and will want some feeling of home. Make sure to pack some comfortable PJs that are easy to move around in and some slippers – those hospital floors are cold! Remember – while there will no longer be a baby in your belly, you won’t be back to your old self either. They make some really cozy postpartum pjs!

Don’t forget those phone, camera and iPad chargers! You won’t believe how many pictures of your little one you will take and send out to everyone on your contact list!

I liked having my own toiletries in the shower at the hospital – like my own shampoo and body wash. Also don’t forget toothpaste and a toothbrush!

What’s in the Hospital Bag for Baby?

The baby won’t need too much that isn’t provided by the hospital, but one of the most exciting things – a coming home outfit! This is so much fun to pick out! You want something warm since no matter what the temperature, your little baby cannot regulate their own temperature yet.

Don’t forget to bring a hat too! A lot of hospitals will provide a little hat that the baby has likely been wearing a lot since their birth, but I liked having one I brought to make it feel more personal.

If you think you might want to use a binky with your baby, I would suggest bringing one with you. The hospital I delivered at did not provide one, but was ok for us to use it if we brought one ourselves.

And don’t forget the most important thing – a car seat! Without a car seat, you will have no way to bring your baby home from the hospital. Add it to your baby registry so you don’t forget!

What’s in the Hospital Bag for Your Significant Other?

If you are lucky enough to have your significant other stay with you at the hospital, they will need the basics – changes of clothes and toiletries. They may also want to bring along a pair of slippers in case they need to run down the hall to get something or just to walk around your room.
