5 Simple and Easy Indoor Activities for Kids

With the cold, unpredictable weather, it can be hard to keep the kids busy and help them get some energy out without going outside.  It can be hard to keep them occupied.

I’m always looking for new ideas of things to do and hopefully these will help you out too!

Build a Fort

This might be one of my daughters favorite things to do.  Whether we are doing it in the middle of the day or when she is relaxing at night, she LOVES a fort!

I usually try to put up blankets to make a fort and then put blankets, pillows and stuffed animals inside that we can play with.  Another option is to get a collapsible fort – my daughter has gotten a couple different ones for birthdays and holidays.  I like these because they are easy to set up and take down and not as much of a mess!

Have a Dance Party

Having a dance party with your kids is a great way for them to get some energy out and at the same time, you get to get moving too!  My kids turn giggly and are super silly when we put the music on.  They love seeing me dance with them and singing along to the music.  I end up laughing right along with them because they are having so much fun!

Set up Movie Time

A great way to spend time on those cold days is to cuddle up for a movie.  We usually set up a bunch of blankets and pillows on the floor.  Then we either pop some popcorn or make up a snack mix.  Once we are all set, we all snuggle on the floor and watch a movie.  The kids love it when I lay on the floor with them – I have no idea why, but I won’t turn away their snuggles!

Arts and Crafts

The thing I love about arts and crafts is it can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be!

I love picking up little arts and crafts to do with my daughter – you can usually get them pretty cheap at Michael’s craft store or Target.  Those are great if there are holidays coming up.

One of our favorites is just some construction paper and crayons or markers.  My daughter will draw 20 pictures and it keeps her busy for pretty much longer than anything else.  And I love seeing her be creative!

Scavenger Hunt

The fun thing about having a scavenger hunt inside is there are SO many options!  It can be as short or as long as you want.  I usually just take a piece of notebook paper and jot down some things.  My daughter always asks for more items to find.  I try to mix in some easier and harder ones (since the harder ones take a longer time!)

What is your favorite indoor activity to do with the kids?

  1. I love these ideas! My toddler and I try to keep busy, and I never thought of a scavenger hunt. He is three now so I think he’d be into it – I am going to give it a try in the new year!

    1. I started doing them this fall with my 4 year old and she loves them! Even when the list has things that are in plain sight – she thinks it’s so much fun!
