How to Prevent Diaper Rash in Summer

Have you gone to change your little baby’s diaper and their poor little bum was so red and raw?   Do you wonder what could have helped with that nasty diaper rash?

When my daughter was about 9 months old, she had the worst case of diaper rash – she would scream and cry every time we had to change her.  Both me and my husband had to be involved because one person had to do the wiping and one had to hold my daughter so she wouldn’t try to climb off the changing table to get away because it hurt her so bad.  I would cry right along with her, I felt so terrible that she was in pain and I couldn’t immediately take the pain away.

As I look back on it now, there were a few things that likely could have helped to prevent it and we’ve done these with my son and seen much less in the diaper rash department.

  • On hot summer days, change diapers more frequently.  The wet diaper can rub and cause diaper rash more easily or frequently.
  • If there is even a hint of redness, use diaper cream.  It helps provide a barrier between the diaper and your baby and can prevent it from getting worse.
  • The best diaper cream we’ve used is called Triple Paste.  It is thick and you can put on a good layer and the diaper rash clears up much more quickly than other diaper creams we’ve used before.
  • If the diaper rash is already bad, let the baby sleep during the night without a diaper – can certainly be messy, I know, but the air helps the rash to dry out.  Then cream it up in the morning with the diaper.

Diaper rash is common with babies – both of mine had it at different times.  Hopefully these tips help you get through the worst of it!

I’m so jealous! They are the worst and it broke my heart watching my little ones cry in such pain.

  1. I can’t believe I’ve never thought to let my super-prone-diaper-rash-baby sleep without a diaper on. Like Obviously I can wash sheets! Thank you for this. So needed! I want to share this on my facebook page too!
